Synopsis

By the end of the 19th century, Napoleon Sarony was not only an outstanding portraitist, but also a pioneer of celebrity photography. He produced the most memorable images of personalities such as Oscar Wilde, Tchaïkovski, Sarah Bernard, Verdi, and Mark Twain. “Three Seasons of Sarony” dares to compare the life of this19th century innovator with that of three present day photographers, Chris Buck, Stephanie Diani and Jocelyn Michel. This exploration parallels the motivations and uncertainties of our three contemporary photographers with those of Sarony, as they wrestle with the concerns between art and commerce.
